Importing Little Egypt

Set of 100 Artist Multiples, Carbon transfer drawings on $1 American bills

The 100 artist multiples that compliment the Streets of Cairo portraits feature the side of American one-dollar bills that depict the Eye of Providence (symbolized by a Pyramid and the All Seeing Eye). Drawn onto this image are archival images of Little Egypt(s). The multiples speak to the circulation of iterations of Little Egypt in North American popular culture, and how the migration of the single dancer from the Middle East to Chicago catalysed a complex and continued economy based on the exploitation of her image.

I am a grateful recipient of OAC's Visual Artists Creation Projects 2017-2018 as well as the OAC's Exhibition Assistance Grant 2018 which allowed me to present this work at Modern Fuel Gallery in 2018.
I would like to acknowledge the generous funding support from the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario.
